Located in the centre of Jakarta. Construction on the Bioscoop Metropool began in 1932. It was later renamed Megaria Theater. Renamed Metropole Theater in August 1949, it didn’t open until 1951, when the first film screened in the 1,700-seat auditorium was Betty Hutton in “Annie Get Your Gun”. A second screen was added at the rear in 1986. It was taken over by the Cinema 21 chain in April 1989, and was re-named Metropole 21
In 1993, the city administration designated the building a site of cultural heritage. Now converted into a six-screen multiplex, it is now the oldest cinema building standing in Jakarta.
