Hollywood Playhouse Fire

Located on N. Las Palmas Avenue, just south of Sunset Boulevard. The building was constructed in 1905. The Hollywood Center Theatre was operating in the 1960’s as a mixed-use stage and film theatre. In 1968 it was operating as the Hollywood Center Theatre screening independent adult movies. In 1969, it was hosting a private film club known as Theatre VII, which screened gay porn movies, and included live all-male stage shows at weekends. In 1972 as the Hollywood Center Theatre it was screening Mitchell Brothers adult movies.

Later known as the Hollywood Playhouse, by the mid-1980’s it had become the Howard Fine Acting Studio, which remained open into the mid-2010’s. It became an Event Space which had closed by April 2019 and the building was offered ‘For Lease’. The vacant building was destroyed by fire on July 13, 2022. Two people have been arrested.

The theatre was gutted by a large fire on the morning of 7/13/22. Sitting vacant for a number of years there had been issues with break-ins, squatters, and theft/vandalism. Between preexisting issues with finding a tenant and the fire being extensive enough to cause a partial roof collapse, one has to suspect the surviving structure will be razed for new development.
