The Colony Theatre opened in 1941 at 424 South Evans Street, near Greenville’s Five Points area (the intersection of Fifth Street, Evans Street and Dickinson Avenue). It was a B-movie house, usually showing westerns and children’s weekend matinees; the better films played at the nearby State Theatre (later Park Theatre) and Pitt Theatres.
The Colony Theatre, along with the State Theatre and Pitt Theatre, was owned by Wilby-Kincey Theatres (under their subsidiary North Carolina Theatres). As the Colony Theatre was opened in an existing storefront, it was the smallest of Greenville’s “white” movie theaters.
The Colony Theatre closed by 1955, a victim of television (the State Theatre would close temporarily the following year). It would be gutted and combined with an adjoining storefront to become the new home of Brody’s Department Store by 1960. In 2016 it was taken over by the Upton Brewing Company.

The false front installed by Brody’s Department Store has been removed; the former Colony Theatre is shown in the street view above (the building with the square second-story windows). It is still combined internally with the building to its right (with the arched windows).
The former Colony Theatre and the adjacent storefront, which were combined into a single unit by Brody’s Department Store, are now occupied by the Uptown Brewing Company.
