Grand opening ad as the Wayne Theatre in photos January 1, 1941 with “Shooting High”. July 30, 1976 rebranding and relaunch as the Center Theatre in photos. Rebrand as Variety Cinema December 5, 1985 in photos. Final ad as Variety Cinema on January 2, 1987 with “Jumpin' Jack Flash” in photos. Became the Variety Cinema and Disco but didn’t screen films. later that year. Should be labeled as the Variety Cinema (not Theatre) if one cares about such things.
Operated by Stewart & Everett in the 1970s.
During the 1970’s and by the 1980’s Goldsboro had two Downtown moviehouses: The Paramount and The Center. The Paramount closed in 1986(as a twin theatre) and the Center closed in 1984,but reopened as the Variety Theatre as a discount second-run moviehouse before it closed for good by 1989.
The Wayne Theatre was known as the Center in the 1970s, closed in the early 1980s and reopened as the Variety Theatre around 1985, closing for good by 1989.
This house was called the Wayne Theatre by 1939, the year Ralph Harold Ward became its manager, according to his obituary, published in 2008.
