The Lyric Theatre was opened by July 1953. At the time of its opening seats in the balcony were for the use of African-American patrons only. The screen could be rolled away to allow for the stage to be used for live performances. The Lyric Theatre was operating as a movie theatre into the at least the 1960’s. Following years of neglect and deterioration after its closure, eventually the marque over the entrance collapsed onto the sidewalk.
By May 2022 it was operating as a performing arts theatre.
