The Elco Theatre was taken over by Hal J. Lyon in 1946, according to an article about Lyon in the December 3, 1955 issue of Boxoffice. Lyon took over the Delta Theatre at the same time, bringing his circuit, based in Franklin, Virginia, to six houses.
The ELCO was not on High Street. It was on Western Branch Blvd. just across the street south of the location pinned on the map above. It was on the same block as The Chinese Maid restaurant.
There may be photos of Elco in the library. It actually sat on the road to the back of this pic to left of the red brick building.
It was operational until at least 1967 (when I left Portsmouth) the exact date of closure/demolition is not known to me. It also housed “The Little Theater of Portsmouth” a stage company. I saw my first stage play there.
CT could use photos, both inside and out, and more info on the the Elco.
