Lido Cinema

Located close to West End Square in the Gorseinon district of Swansea, West Glamorgan. Originally a skating rink, then the Palace Theatre. The Lido Cinema was operating prior to 1934. It had a 25 feet wide proscenium.

After CinemaScope was installed in the mid-1950’s, the proscenium was widened to 32 feet. The Lido Cinema was still open in 1966, but had closed by 1980 and had become a bingo club. It has since been demolished.

Lido Cinema run by Richards & Firth, CinemaScope with Kalee 20s and a glass bead screen (only one in the district!)fitted around 1952/53. Originally a roller skating rink and a live music hall called the Palace.Flat floor but with a “slope” of around 10 rows before a small balcony. Ports so low that people in back row who got up to leave masked off the screen! Originally had its own generator as did the other cinema the Electra. After Bingo and a fire the Lido was demolished and flats have been built on the site.
