The three-screen miniplex Ster Century Cinemas Prievidza was opened on 19th April 2012 in the mining town Prievidza in the Midwestern part of the Slovak Republic. It was a part of the extension of the shopping center Korzo. It is located on the first floor and its roof stands out from other equally high building of the mall.
The lease agreement between the owner of the Korzo shopping center (Alfa Group) and the operator of Ster Century Cinemas (Tatrafilm) was signed on 7th January 2011. In addition to the miniplex, in the extension of the shopping center, anchor tenants Hennes & Mauritz and Clemens & August settled down.
Tatrafilm is the exclusive movie distributor for 20th Century Fox, Paramount Pictures, Dreamworks SKG and Universal Pictures in the Slovak Republic.
The opening of the theater was several times rescheduled. First the miniplex should be opened on 22nd December 2011, then on 1st March 2012. According to unofficial information, the first time an important technology had not been delivered, the second time a water related insurance event occurred.
A few months before the opening of the miniplex the last single-screen cinema Banik (eng. Miner) stopped showing first-run movies, due to the lack of 35mm copies from movie distributors. The city Prievidza, which owned the Banik Cinema saw no reason to invest into digital technology, due to the promised opening of the miniplex. Currently (June 2012), the city is trying to find a tenant who would keep the cultural activities in the Manik building.
The three halls of the miniplex have a capacity of 174, 144 and 114 seats (432 seats total). In each auditorium two places for wheelchair users are reserved. Like in its other theaters, Ster Century Cinemas uses in Prievidza Dolby cinema servers, Barco projectors and the most modern Dolby Digital 7.1 audio system. The largest auditorium has the Dolby 3D-technology installed.
The opening of Ster Century Prievidza will cause a loss of theater audiences in the multi-screen cinemas in Trencin, Banska Bystrica and Nitra, where the local audience traveled for cinema entertainment. This is bad news for Continental Film, the operator of CineMAX miniplexes and the main rival of Ster Century Cinemas.
While the brand’s other new theater in Spisska Nova Ves (opened on 5th April 2012) prepared according to the program leaflets significant price reductions, the Prievidza cinema doesn’t make an impression that it should have problems with its attendance. In addition to the cinemas in Prievidza and Spisska Nova Ves (Madaras) Tatrafilm operates two four-screen miniplexes in Kosice (Galeria) and Zilina (Mirage). A fifth miniplex is planned in the town Levice.
The main suppliers for the miniplex are the German PCO Group for refreshments in the cafeteria, the Coca Cola Company for beverages and Cinemaware for electronic tickets ordering.
