The Picture Palace was originally built as a silk mill. It was converted into a cinema in 1910. By 1927 it was operated by Walter Goodall. In the late-1920’s it was re-named New Regal Cinema. In 1933 it came under the control of the J.F. Emery Circuit of Manchester, but they only operated if for a year.

The New Regal Cinema closed in 1964 and was converted into a nightclub, last known as XtremeStudio. The building was ‘For Sale’ in October 2016. By November 2020 it had reopened as an Anytime Fitness Centre.
