The arcade of the Playhouse Guildford cinema is still there but redeveloped. Where the Playhouse was, at the end, is now a retail courtyard and is in the proses of being redone again.
This article says that Guildford’s Picture Playhouse Arcade was designed by local architect Frederick J. Hodgson.
I was a trainee projectionist for the last year before it was closed. It was not in good decoration with years of cigarette smoke badly staining the plaster hence the house lights we’re heavenly tinted to hide the condition of the interior. The projectors were old but in very good condition light powered by ark light. My first job was to light the exit boxes with a pol with a taper as they where powered by gas mantles. This was my first job and as I was under age to see x films I had to have permtion from the council and parents. When closed I was transferred to the Odeon but it wasn’t the same And didn’t last there. I only have fond memories of the Playhouse.
