Located in Skelmersdale, Lancashire. The Empire Cinema was opened in 1915 On 26th May 1930 it showed the town’s first ‘talkie’, “Atlantic” starring Franklin Dyall. A British Thomson-Houston(BTH) sound system had been installed. It had a 32 feet wide proscenium.
The Empire Cinema was refurbished in 1935, but in later years it clearly went rather ‘downhill’, as it was disparagingly known as “Billy Shaw’s Bug Hutch”, presumably he was the then operator!
The Empire Cinema was closed in 1963 and went over to bingo. But that didn’t last long and the building was demolished in 1966.
