The development of electronic amplification in the 1920s was an essential ingredient of sound motion pictures. This technology was also applied to home radio receivers and record players. Several brands of gramophone were adapted to add music and sound effects for silent film presentations. The Brunswick ‘cinema special’ Panatrope was probably the most popular. The similar ‘Truesound’ set-up consisted of a two turntable operating console, two phonograph pick-ups and amplifier with six loud speakers. (Mick Simmons was, and is, a specialty sports store which also dabbled in electronic entertainments a century ago.)
