The Pilot Drive-In opened prior to 1955 located in the town of Pilot Mountain, N.C. It parked 225 cars and was operated by two local bankers, J. Wick Gordon and Joseph Pell. The town’s claim to fame was being mentioned on “The Andy Griffith Show”. Mount Airy was the town that Mayberry was loosely based on for the TV show and Andy Griffith’s home town. The town next to Mayberry was named Mount Pilot. It is variation of the name Pilot Mountain.
The Pilot Drive-In finally closed in December of 1985 and was demolished. The Howell-Nelson Funeral Services & Crematory was built on the site of the old drive-in.

So what your saying here is after it died a funeral home came in and buried it, I guess thats fitting. Its alot better than being buried by a walmart!!!!
There’s an episode of “The Andy Griffith Show” in which Barney can be heard on the phone to Juanita at the diner, asking her out to the drive-in at Mt. Pilot.
I’ve found newspaper ads from the summer of 1986 that it was still going strong. I’ll try to find the correct close date.
I bet people are dying to go to this place now!?
