The Cleveland Theatre was opened in 1914. Building department records in 1919 give dimensions for an existing building of 38 feet by 110 feet with an open air motion picture theatre located on Pitkin Avenue adjacent to the Cleveland Theatre. In 1919 the owner of the Cleveland Theatre, Cleveland Amusement Company, Inc., filed for a permit to replace this building with a larger theatre.
The application for a new building permit gave dimensions for a proposed theatre measuring 50 feet 10 inches by 190 feet. On February 6, 1919 the requested building permit was denied by the superintendent of buildings. The reason for the permit being denied was, the 190 foot depth of the new theatre building would have extended into an area that was zoned for residential use only.
The Cleveland Theatre was closed in 1926. A recent photo shows that the building still stands and it appears to be unused.

I looked the address up in the 1980’s tax photos of the building, and it hasn’t changed much in the 30 years that have passed since that photo has been taken….but judging by the street view above, the whole neighborhood around it has been rebuilt, the surrounding buildings in the 80’s were all abandoned….
