Blackhawk Plaza Movie Theater Opening Suspended Indefinitely Apple Cinemas said it was “unable to move forward opening” the planned theater due to uncertainty with the ownership of Blackhawk Plaza. Michael Wittner’s profile picture Michael Wittner, Patch Staff Verified Patch Staff Badge Posted Fri, Jan 30, 2026 at 2:09 pm PT DANVILLE, CA — Apple Cinemas announced Friday that it will indefinitely suspend the opening of a planned 26,200-square-foot movie theater at Blackhawk Plaza.
“With the uncertainty surrounding the ownership structure of the Plaza, we are unable to move forward opening at this time. We are monitoring the situation and have hope that at some point we can realize our goal of serving the Tri-Valley community. Please check back for updates as we will share as we have more information,” the movie theater chain said.
In November 2023, commercial real estate developer Jones Lang LaSalle announced that Apple Cinemas, a Northeastern theater chain, would open a first-run and blockbuster movie theater in the former location of Century Blackhawk Plaza, which closed in December 2022. The chain’s first California location would feature luxury seating and the ability to order food from the seats. Following the closure of Century Blackhawk, it was to be Danville’s sole movie theater.
The opening faced several setbacks. In July, it postponed its opening due to litigation with Apple, Inc., who filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against Apple Cinemas, according to reporting from Danville-San Ramon. Now, the future of all of Blackhawk Plaza is up in the air, following the closure of Draeger’s and allegations that the Ramanujan Group, LLC. owner defaulted on a $5 million loan. A court hearing is requesting that the property be placed under receivership.
The former Century Blackhawk Plaza could open by the end of 2025 under the management of Apple Cinemas:
San Francisco, CA: East Coast Theater Chain Coming to California, Opening Two Former Movie Theaters [Jun 30, 2025]
This theater closed December 4, 2022:
Danville, CA: Century Blackhawk Plaza Closed [Dec 7, 2022]
According to our records, this location was a (California-based) Century Theatres location before Cinemark acquired the former company in 2006:
Cinemark USA, Inc. Acquires Century Theatres, Inc. [Aug 10, 2006]
The Century Blackhawk Plaza was closed for one year during the COVID-19 pandemic from March of 2020 to March of 2021. An anchor of the Blackhawk Plaza boutique mall shopping complex, Cinemark closed there permanently at the end of its lease following showtimes on December 4, 2022.
The correct name for this theatre is ‘Century Blackhawk Plaza’.
Features Cinemark Luxury Loungers in all auditoriums.
Century ( The Modern version ) also had a couple Multi plexes outside their usual geographic area in South Dakota and Iowa.
Does anyone know what prompted the Syufy Brothers to sell? I know they had debt of over 300 million… I don’t think they carried any debt when Ray Sr. was alive…he expanded slowly, and normally only built on land he owned.
Heh — I forgot that IL is east of the Mississippi. I used to audit those theatres all the time. :)
Scott…You are incorrect the modern era Century Theatres had two Complexes in the Chicago Area…and a third one that was in the planning stages when they were bought out by Cinemark. By the way does anyone know the “ real” reason that the Syufy Brothers sold out?
Two things: This theatre was never operated by Century Theatres, it was always a Cinemark but was rebranded a Century after Cinemark purchased that company.
Secondly — many of the Century Theatres (of California) are being marked as operated by “Century Circuit Inc.” which if I understand correctly, represents the circuit from the 1960’s that operated on the east coast. These are two very separate companies. A good rule of thumb is that the modern company never operated a theatre east of the Mississippi (and the east coast chain operated very few west of the Mississippi).
