Local coal vendor John Donnelly opened the Arcadian Cinema (known informally as the ‘Ark’ or ‘Johnny Donnelly’s’) on 18th December 1912. Seating was in stalls and a small balcony. It had a 25 feet wide proscenium and a 24 feet deep stage, with two dressing rooms.
The Arcadian Cinema closed in 1960 and was demolished later that decade when slum clearance swept away many of the buildings in the area.
