More formally known as the Great Northern Kinema, the Kinema House was sandwiched between the Great Northern Railway Station and what is now the Lincoln Building, in Great Victoria Street. The building style was old English timbered, in a commendable attempt at the then embryo art of cinema design. The Kinema House opened on 7th April 1914, but rather surprisingly closed in 1920.
It was occupied until after World War II by Stanley Motor Works, its two-storey, old-fashioned timber-framed front standing out as an oddity on this busy thoroughfare. Over the years it has had other tenants: a tea room, amusement arcade, furniture store and office suppliers, but it was finally demolished in 1995. In the late-1990s the site was used as a car park beside the new railway station and Europa Hotel.
