During a visit to Geneva in June 2016 I met Didier Zuchuat, owner of the Cinerama Empire, at his other cinema, Cine 17. He told me that the cinema that was demolished to make way for the Empire opened in 1923 as Cinema Colibri. It was enlarged and renamed Cinema Pelican in the early 1950s before closing in 1965. As noted above, its replacement, the Cinerama Empire, opened in 1967.
At the Cinerama Empire I saw “Money Monster”, starring George Clooney. This is a truly superb cinema, the largest single screen in the city.
CINERAMA EMPIRE was re-opened end-October 2015 with GENEVA INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL TOUS ECRANS and to the general public on Nov. 11th : it’s the largest cinema in the city with 279 armchairs at the orchestra level and sofas seating 44 persons on the balcony plus 4 spaces intended to disabled, totalizing 327 with à giant panoramic curved screen served by a 4K digital projector and ample sound system. While other cinemas in Geneva are being closed, this legendary porn house from 1969 to 1996 was restored with great care and is now listed as a landmark of modernism of the mid-1960s.
