Empire Cinema

In Leigh-on-Sea, near Southend-on-Sea, Essex, the Empire Palace opened in December 1910. It was owned by Mr. J. Mitchell, but by 1917 Mr. A Schrynemakers was the proprietor. Mr. R. Burton took over by 1926. The South Essex Cinema Syndicate Ltd. controlled the cinema by 1933. The building was without a ceiling, the iron girders of the roof being clearly visible in the auditorium. The cinema became known as the Empire Cinema prior to closing in December 1937, at which time it was owned by Mistlin’s Theatres (Essex) Ltd.

More recently the building was used as a car repair workshop, then Choppens hairdressing supplies. It was demolished in February 2009 and the site converted into a car park.
