Kosmos Kinema

Opened on the 23rd February 1914 in a shopping street. Affectionately known as the ‘Kozzy’ it was known for Mac Sennett comedies and westerns. Fred Bernhard of the Union Cinemas circuit took control in October, 1935. When Union Cinemas circuit was absorbed by Associated British Cinemas(ABC), he retained all their Tunbridge Wells cinemas until his early death in June 1949. Essoldo took over from his Provincial and Urban Cinemas in February 1954 and an increasingly X-Rated fare was presented.

Closure of the Kosmos Kinema took place on 26th March, 1960 with “Demetrius and the Gladiators”. Gutted to become a Pricerite store, the foyer was kept for Peter Lord. Traces of the bay window remain above the current shop -Kew. There was a café attached and the local press record a lady discovering a silent outmoded version of the café years after it closed, in a rare time warp experience.
