Located in Leighton Buzzard, Bedfordshire. The Empire Cinema was opened in February 1922, but closed in June 1922 when the owner went bankrupt. It was taken over by new owners and re-opened on 3rd August 1922 as the Grand Cinema.
It seems this too was not a great success, as in was closed in the summer of 1923 and re-fitted out as a live theatre, it reopened as the Hippodrome Theatre. When ‘talkies’ arrived, it was equipped with sound and re-opened as the Grand Cinema on 1st March 1930. In 1931 it was taken over by the Shipman & King circuit, and they closed the Grand Cinema on 3rd September 1932.
The building was used as a car showroom for many years, and was still operating in this use when it was destroyed by a fire in 1969.
