The Pastime building was located right on Maine St where the parking lot of the Tontine Mall is now located. The Eveningsar Cinema is in the Mall which was originally an auto dealership – Goodwin Chevrolet.
Prior to WWII my mother and father met working at the Pastime. He was head usher/asst manager and my mother a projectionist. After the war, he was manager (and asst manager of the associated Cumberland Theater) until it’s demolition. The Pastime, unlike the Cumberland, was never upgraded to show color.
The Theatre Historical Society archive has the MGM Theatre Report for the Pastime; Card # 352. Address is “Main St.” There is an exterior photo dated May 1941. Condition was Fair. The report says it opened in 1937 and is showing MGM movies. There were 420 seats on the main floor and 250 balcony. College student patronage. Competing: Cumberland Theatre.
This is the location of the Eveningstar Cinema, which I built with my first partner, Jerry Siebel, and opened in 1979. The Pastime was LONG gone by that time, building and all. There had been an abortive attempt to revive its memory circa 1977, located where the present-day Eveningstar operates, but that was very short-lived; lasting perhaps a year and showing film in 16mm with bookshelf speakers installed for the sound system. The Eveningstar has operated in this location since opening November 2, 1979.– Greg Melick
