Tennessee’s oldest silent movie theater still in it’s original location has been completely renovated. Shows current movies and hosts live stage performances. The original Palace opened in 1913, showing silent movies for a nickel. Open weekends and for special performances.

The Palace (Photo 1and photo 2) is a charm. This nearly 100-year-old theatre is nestled in one of the most picturesque town squares in the southeast. A lot of effort and love has gone into restoring this landmark. Although not as ornate, the Palace could pass as the older sibling of the Gate Cinema in the Notting Hill section of London.
The Palace has a long, narrow auditorium plus a small balcony which was converted into the projection room during the renovation. I would guess the theater width is about 25 or 30 feet and the orignal screen for silent films extended most of that distance in the 1.33 aspect ratio. So when Cinemascope came along in the 1950’s and with no room to widen the screen, the 2.66 picture had to fit onto a 1.33 screen resulting in a smaller picture, unfortuately. After the renovation, the new screen is now about 1.85 to accomodate most of the current releases.
Theater closed recently for repairs but is now open again; story here: View link
