Located in Stornoway, Ross & Cromarty, on the Isle of Lewis off the west coast of north Scotland. The Playhouse was opened in February 1934. It was operated by A.G. Matthews Circuit of Glasgow. It was equipped with a Western Electric(WE) sound system. By 1944 it was part of the J.B. Milne Theatres chain of Dundee and was equipped with a British Thomson-Houston(BTH) sound system. For a while it was known as the Lewis Picturehouse.
In the 1960’s it was operating as a part time bingo club with films retained on other days. The Playhouse was still open in 1969, but had closed in 1979. The building is used today by the Royal British Legion and they moved out in March 2014.

A Presbyterian minister pronounced a curse on the cinema for showing “Jesus Christ, superstar”. Technically it was due to breach of fire regulation but the curse was believed to be the true cause of the Playhouse closing weeks after the curse.
The Playhouse opened in February 1934 and closed sometime during 1979 when the building was put up for sale. The British Legion moved in but closed the social club in March 2014 owing to falling attendances, and the building is now empty. Bingo was held at the cinema three times a week in the 1960s when the address was known as 5 Beach Street.
