1950 Gem Theater

Located in the existing Bretlinger Building. Opened as the Dexter Theatre on April 7, 1940. On September 3, 1944 it was renamed the Gem Theatre, reopening with Gene Autry in “Boots and Saddles”. The theatre seated 396 and was closed on November 10, 1954 with Niall MacGinnis in “Martin Luther”. It is now an auto-repair shop.

The Gem Theater open in the late 1940’s when the main theater was being remolded (Weeks Theater). The theater closed about 1953 and was turned into a Western Auto store. The build still standing. The theater ran second run movies, double features on Friday night and westerns on Saturday.

T he Dexter Theatre opened on April 7, 1940 in the existing Bretlinger Building . On September 3, 1943, it reopened as the Gem Theater with “Boots and Saddles.” Advertisements cease on November 10, 1954 with a four-wall screening of “Martin Luther.”
