The August 24, 1964 issue of Boxoffice had a brief item dateline Merrick which said “[t]he Merrick Theatre here will be celebrating its second anniversary on Tuesday (25) with a champagne party.”
Prior to the Anchor Savings Bank it was the Heritage Savings Bank, then the movie theater, pharmacy, A&P, bakery, Colonial Cards ( use to get my match box cars and balsam wood airplanes there) barber shop, jewelry store, pizzeria ( took up two store fronts ). RH Grants and later they had an addition that was the Chinese restaurant. I also remember the Shell gas station they added up front.
I believe the bank was Anchor Bank located at the entrance of the shopping centeer
I worked as a new Pharmacist in the the Holiday Drugs (later called Town Drugs) pharmacy right next door to the theater. Remember seeing Gimmie Shelter one hot summer day …..all day to get out of the heat!
Before it was a twin it was just The Merrick Theatre. I’m certain I saw “Colossus: The Forbin Project” there. Also, Neil Young’s “Journey Through the Past” with a short (i.e. music video before music videos) of Grand Funk Railroad’s “We’re an American Band”. They also sometimes showed foreign films. I saw “Going Places” there (incredibly raunchy for the time) and earlier they had Costa-Gavras’s “Sleeping Car Murders”.
Uploaded an early photo of the theatre which didn’t carry the Holiday Park designation on the facade. Don’t remember if this was changed later on.
It was as you say, absorbed by Chase and therein lies the problem. The painting was in the original bank, which at this point, may have been WaMu….but I don’t know if the original bank too the painting when they left or if Chase when the remodeled put it somewhere. Chase actually has been trying to find out for me..but this is some 20 years hence so not the easiest.
divorce = even if one knew the bank I’m sure it has been absorbed by Citi, Chase or whatever.
These posts are years old but I’m hoping those who remember the Holiday Park Shopping center from 1981 through 1990…might be able to tell me what was the name of the Bank that was in the shopping center. My mom will be turning 80 and she was a model for a painting in that bank..had to do with Merrick’s history, the Merokian Indians…I’d like to track it down and buy it for her but so far ..no luck. Any one remember? thank you.
Before they twinned it they used to have the movie times on the pylon. I was to meet a friend of mine, who was alway late there, so I told him the picture began 20 minutes earlier than the stated time. When he arrived, on time, because of my fib, he exited the car laughing because he saw the time on the pylon. He said, “You know me”.
it was not the corner property, but it was on the left as you entered, way before where the Waldbaums is now. I used to go as a kid , before it was twinned. I recall seeing THEY SHOOT HORSES, DONT THEY? there
As I recall it was almost immediately to the left as you entered the parking lot. I don’t believe it was the corner retail property, tho.
If anyone remembers the exact location of the movie theater within the mall, this seems to be one of the rare cases where the google street view allows you to “enter” the mall’s parking lot. The view is currently set across the street from the mall, looking north.
Hey,Johnny BLOCKBUSTER is about gone now.
One interesting note on this, the manager was murdered on the premises. It seems he was “entertaining” after hours and ……
I had cousins living in Merrick when I was a kid. I saw CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND at this theater in 1977 and then again three years later for the 1980 SPECIAL EDITION.
This was in the Holiday Park Shopping Center, approximate address 1692 Merrick Road, Merrick, NY.
