The Brotfabrik Kino is a vital part of the alternative cultural project Brotfabrik (literally bread factory) in the northeastern Berliner district Weissensee. The premises of the Brotfabrik once harboured a large bakery, which closed down in the 1950’s. Thereafter, the building was used for different purposes. In 1986 a youth club was accomodated on the site including a concert hall, a theatre, a gallery, later also a pub.
In 1991, the gallery space was transformed into a small cinema, which was reputed to be the first arthouse cinema of East-Berlin after the fall of the Berlin wall. The cinema still distinguised itself by a very selective choice of films including special programmes. One of my favourites is the project “Berlin film catalogue”. This project strives to enlist all or at least most of the films that have been produced on Berlin soil, once a month one of those, often rare, films is shown.
The cinema, thus, also has faithful customers. Architecture-wise, the cinema is nothing special even though it does not lack atmosphere. The screening room is rather narrow and the screen is of small dimensions, the seats are bright red plush seats. All in all, it represents the type of cinema which makes you feel comfortable. Given that the Brotfabrik also includes a very cosy café-pub, the site is well liked by locals.
