The independent Taylor Drive-In opened on June 24, 1953 as “Southwest Virginia’s and East Tennessee’s Largest and Most Modern Drive-in Theater".
The opening attraction at the 450-car theater, with a 65x56 foot screen, was Fred MacMurray in “Fair Wind to Java". It was said their snack bar could serve 420 people in 15 minutes.
On February 11, 1962, the Times-News reported that Martin Theatres had purchased the Taylor Drive-In from the Taylor Brothers. The Taylors, Ralph, Bascom, and Malcom, also sold two other theaters to Martin Theatres.
The Taylor Drive-In closed in June of 1976 and by August the land was advertised for sale.
