Savoy Cinema

Located in the suburb of Marsh, about 1 mile west of the City centre. The Savoy Picture House opened on 19th February 1920. By 1930 it had a British Thomson Houston(BTH) sound system and was presenting films and variety. In 1947 it was re-named New Savoy Cinema, and retained that name until at least 1962, when it was listed as the Savoy Cinema. Still open in 1966, it had gone from listings by 1980. In 2007 it was a DIY hardware store and remains so in 2015. It is now a childrens play-centre.

The building is now home to Playworld, an indoor play centre with roller skating facilites, set up by Raj Handa, which opened on 30 May 2014. This scuppered plans by another businessman to open a restaurant in the former cinema. The building is also remembered as being home to Lodge’s supermarket back in the day.
