Central Cinema

Located in Market Weighton, East Yorkshire, midway between York and Hull. It was set back from Finkle Street almost adjacent to the Red Lion Hotel. Originally built as the Central Hall, it opened in November 1928 and was used mainly for meetings and dances. It was soon converted into the Central Cinema when a balcony was added and the main floor was sloped. The Central Cinema was equipped with an AWH sound system and the proscenium was 21 feet wide. Occasional variety performances completed the programming. By the 1940’s a British Talking Pictures(BTP) sound system had been installed.

The Central Cinema was closed on 24th December 1960. The building has since been demolished and the site forms part of the lower car park to the Red Lion Hotel.

I was born in Market Weighton in 1955 & can amazingly remember the Central Cinema & the beautiful house attached…though must have been in poor repair even then…with Mrs Bird’s sweet shop next door. My Grandad was Harold Martin who owned the cycle & TV shop further along High Street, living above the shop. Such vivid & heart warming memories of an idyllic childhood growing up in Market Weighton & many of the old buildings now demolished.
