the “Playhouse of the City” is perhaps more fairly Dundee Rep (1982, architects Dundee-based Nicoll Russell Studios). One of only two rep theatres in Scotland (and the UK?) to maintain a core acting ensemble (the other being Pitlochry Festival Theatre), it also periodically co-produces with Edinburgh’s Royal Lyceum Theatre.

The Whitehall Theatre has no acting company, and hosts amateur productions and touring shows, mostly one-nighters. Bigger tours tend to get hosted by the Rep, in gaps between their own in-house productions.

Also, it was operated by J. B. Milne Theatres Ltd as an All Square Bingo Club, it’s listed in a 1966 Christmas Greetings poster that was on display in all of his cinema and bingo clubs at the time.

The State didn’t close until 1968. I saw a couple of films there that year and was in the building just after closure.
