Located in Darfield, 4½ miles south-east of Barnsley in South Yorkshire. The Empire Cinema was opened on 14th December 1914. The proscenium was 25ft wide, the stage was 20ft deep and there were two dressing rooms. Of the 600-seats, 100 were in the balcony. An Imperial sound system was installed in 1931. By 1934 it had been renamed Empire Theatre operated by Provincial Empire Theatres. It never opened on Sundays and did not convert to CinemaScope. It was closed on 29th December 1956 with the seasonal favourite “White Christmas” starring Bing Crosby. Almost immediately it began its new life as Darfield Church Hall.
