Located in Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire. The New Cinema was opened on 3rd December 1934 with Eddie Cantor in “Roman Scandals”. Seating was provided on a stadium plan, with a raised stepped section at the rear, rather that the usual overhanging balcony. It was initially equipped with a British Talking Pictures(BTP) sound system, which was replaced in 1945 to a British Acoustic(BA) sound system.
In 1946 under new owners it was re-named Ritz Cinema. A further change of ownership in 1953 changed the name to Regent Cinema from September 1953.
The Regent Cinema was closed on 22nd September 1973 with Anthony Hopkins in “When Eight Bells Toll” and Sven-Bertil Taube in “Puppet on a Chain”.
The building was converted into the Regent Squash Club and was later demolished and housing named Regent Court was built on the site.
