In 1938, the “New” Royal’s owner W.F. Sonnemann made $10,000 in improvements – one of three he had at that time. But a fire (hard to see but that’s the picture at bottom) on Janaury 15, 1940 led to the theater’s temporary closure (add at right). Also notice that a contest is being conducted for Sonnemann’s fourth theater which would become the U•ARK.
