This was the first permanent cinema in Irlam, Lancashire. It is mentioned as the New Palace Cinema, Cadishead, in Kinematograph Year Book 1914 with no other information. Situated at Irlam Brow opposite the Station Road junction on Liverpool Road it was operated by A.W. Pilling until the late-1920’s. A.H. Lord ran it until the late-1930’s; then the Barnes family until 1947 when they sold it to Palace Cinema (Irlam) Ltd. Some time in the early-1950’s ownership transferred to Ellesmere Entertainments Ltd. with offices in central Manchester, and the name was changed to Savoy Cinema.
Even in pre-CinemaScope days the proscenium was 24ft wide. There were 3 dressing rooms for the 18ft deep stage. Capacity was 800 in the Kinematograph Year Books up to around 1940 when it fell to 753. In KYB 1957 it is 696. The sound system was British Thompson Houston(BTH).
It was demolished in 1966. Its exact site is a car park for, and on the south side of, an Irish Catholic Men’s Club.
