Located in Houghton le Spring, County Durham. The New Empire Theatre was opened in 1912 as a 750-seat cine-variety theatre. Around 1929 it was equipped with a Western Electric(WE) sound system.
By 1967 it was operating as a part time bingo club, with cinema use on other days. The Empire Theatre was closed as a cinema in 1968 and became a bingo club. In recent years it has been taken over by the Houghton Dance & Performing Arts Academy, and part of the building is used as their performance theatre, named the Zazz Theatre.

The building next door (B & M Bargains) was the Grand Theatre / Grand Picture Palace which was converted to a Kwik Save Supermarket before becoming B & M).

Odd name, Zazz!! Why the name Zazz?
