In Herne Bay, Kent, the Paragon Cinema was a very early cinema - and an early casualty, closing during World War I.
The auditorium, 100ft long and 18ft wide, was painted chocolate colour up to dado rail level, then pale pink, broken up by chocolate panels. The projection box was lined with sheet iron, and contained a Maltese Cross lantern supplied with power from an 11hp Stockport gas engine, coupled to a Holmes Castle dynamo.
At one time, much more recently, the building was occupied by Kent Trailer Centre. When I visited, in October 1999, it was ‘Mums the Word’, a second-hand furniture store. By 2009 it had become a cafe/restaurant.
