In the Knighton suburb of Leicester, the county town of Leicestershire, in the Midlands, the Liberal Club was built in the 1890’s. Throughout its life it has had a variety of uses, including being the HQ for 9th Leicester Scouts, St. John’s Ambulance Brigade, a Sunday school run by The Crusaders, a warehouse and a wholesaler.
In addition to all that activity, for a few years it operated as a cinema. The Knighton Cinema opened in 1913, part of the H. D. Moorhouse circuit. There were 354 seats in the stalls, and 90 in the circle. The front seats were wooden benches, but there were tip-up seats further back.
At some time the name changed to Lyric Cinema. But this was a short-lived cinema: it closed in 1916.
The building was being offered to let when I visited, in December 1999. It was subsequently occupied by Leicester Chinese Christian Church.
