In the north Norfolk town of North Walsham, the Picturedrome, a conversion of existing premises, was opened by 1912 by John Dixon. The small, plain building offered a cosy retreat despite its lack of refinery. The floor was raked at the rear, with a box with six seats for special patrons.
Harold and Lydia Coates came from London to manage the cinema for all its life. They ran the shows with very little help, with Mr Coates producing the publicity material and also maintaining the generator as there was no mains electricity supply. Harold even operated the projector full-time when his assistant was called up during World War I.
The Picturedrome only survived a week after the new Regal Cinema (see separate Cinema Treasures entry) opened in 1931.
After closure the building had a number of uses. When I visited, in September 2000, it was occupied by Eastern Carpets, which apparently continues to this date (November 2015).
