In the small town of Uppingham, in the county of Rutland, the Rutland Cinema was declared open in January 1937 by J. F. Wolfendon, later Sir John Wolfendon, Headmaster of Uppingham School. The owner was Bert J. Wilson, there was a 16ft deep stage and the proscenium was 26ft wide. Two dressing rooms were used by occasional variety acts. There was a small circle, seating 84.
CinemaScope was installed in 1956. In the early-1960’s the cinema was acquired by R. S. Hamblin; Mrs Flood was the manageress. In 1964 bingo was introduced on Thursday and Sunday evenings.
The Rutland Cinema closed in 1972, the final film being “The Tales of Beatrix Potter”, starring Frederick Ashton and Alexander Grant.
By the time I visited, in July 2002, the former foyer was occupied by Flicks, a ladies hairdressers. More recently, the building has been home to Zorba 6 Kebab and Pizza restaurant and takeaway.
