In the East Dunbartonshire town of Kirkintilloch, to the north east of Glasgow, it is thought the Black Bull Cinema opened during the mid to late-1920’s. In a reversal of the current Wetherspoon model, it was a conversion of a former public house, presumably the Black Bull, when the town went ‘dry’ in 1923. (The ban on the sale of alcohol from public premises was not lifted until 1967.)
It was equipped with a RCA sound system and the proscenium was 20ft wide. In the 1927 through 1953 Kinematograph Year Books the proprietor is shown as Black Bull Cinema Kirkintilloch Ltd. In 1927 & 1931 James Eadie was the resident manager.
It was equipped with CinemaScope in the mid-1950’s and the proscenium was widened to 23ft. The Black Bull Cinema was still open in 1966, but later closed and it became a bingo club. More recently it has been a nightclub, Tantra.
