Pavilion Cinema

In the East Sussex coastal town of Portslade-by-Sea, it is thought the Princes Imperial Palace opened around 1910. The proscenium was 31ft wide, and there was a small stage, 10ft deep. During World War I ownership was transferred to Sussex Picturedrome Company Ltd. By 1918 the manager was Robert J. Love.

The cinema was soon known as the Picturedrome. By 1933 ownership had moved on, to P. V. Reynolds, and the name had changed again, to the Pavilion Cinema.

Later on, J. E. Greaves took ownership. (He is listed in the 1953 Kinematograph Year Book.)

The Pavilion Cinema is believed to have closed in the late-1950’s.

When I visited, in January 2004, the building was undergoing some fairly major remodelling/renovation, possibly including the removal of the cinema frontage (assuming it had not been removed earlier). Now covered in sheet metal cladding, the building is home to London & Brighton Plating Ltd.
