In Wellingborough, Northamptonshire, the Silver Cinema opened on Easter Monday 1920. Despite being a relatively small cinema with 690 seats, there was a balcony.
The 1931, 1940 and 1953 Kinematograph Year Books list the owner as Wellingborough Cinema Company Ltd.
After a fire in May 1951 it was closed for refurbishment for 10 months, and re-opened in March 1952, but then closed in 1957.
The foyer was transformed into two shops and the auditorium became a storage area.
When I visited, in March 2004, the front was occupied by ‘Best UK Kebabs’ restaurant. The auditorium was intact. However, in spring 2005, I understand that part of the auditorium was demolished, having become unsafe. It is unclear how much remains.
Meanwhile, more recently, the front has been home to Dosa South Indian restaurant and Chicken Town take-away.
