In Gorey, a small town on Jersey, one of the Channel Islands, the Bible Christian Chapel opened in 1864.
The chapel was converted into a cinema in 1916. It is unclear when this closed, but the building became a badminton hall then, in 1953, a Roman Catholic church, Our Lady of the Assumption.
In 2013, faced with an insufficient number of priests to conduct services, the Church authorities sought permission to demolish the building and erect housing on the site. However, local residents petitioned against this, and the planning authorities ruled in their favour, agreeing that the proposals would be detrimental to the character of the area.
It is unclear whether church services are continuing.
