In the small Lincolnshire town of Bourne, in April 1977, Jeremy Perkins, a projectionist at the town’s former cinema, the Tudor Cinema, and film fan Robert Edwards, formed the Bourne and District Film Society.
They took over a disused warehouse in Burghley Street and converted it into a 75 seat cinema. Utilising two BTH projectors from the Tudor Cinema, that had lain unused since 1972, they opened the Film Theatre on 5th May with “Mary, Queen of Scots” starring Vanessa Redgrave and Glenda Jackson.
The lease on the building expired in 1980 and it was not renewed. Mr Perkins looked for other premises, and found a smaller warehouse down a passage off North Street. Joined by his wife Jean, they set about converting it into a cinema.
The BTH projectors, a screen, measuring 11ft by 7ft (for widescreen) and 14ft by 11ft (for CinemaScope) and seating for 55 patrons were installed.
The grand opening was on 1st October 1982 with the James Bond film “Moonraker”.
The Film Theatre continued until closure in 1991, blamed on falling attendances and the high cost of film rentals.
