In the Castleton district of Rochdale, the Ideal Cinema is not listed in the 1914 or 1927 Kinematograph Year Book’s, but is in the 1931 edition. The proprietor was listed as E. Woodall. There were two shows each evening, with three changes of programme each week. It was a conversion of an existing building and stood to the left of the Princess Cinema and were separated by Milne Street.
The same proprietor is shown in the 1940 edition, but by then there two changes of programme each week.
By 1953 the owner was given as Woodalls (Rochdale) Ltd. That entry additionally states that the cinema had a proscenium 22ft wide.
It is not known when the Ideal Cinema closed (it was still listed in 1953).
When I visited, in March 2006, the building appeared to be unoccupied. More recently, it has become home to sheet metal fabricator Airflow UK Ltd.
Note: The Ideal Cinema and the Princess Cinema were under the same ownership, and shared the same telephone number.
