In the small County Durham town of South Moor, to the south of Stanley, the simply named Cinema was licenced on 26th September 1912 and opened on 7th October. The licensee was William Hately of Willington, County Durham.
The Cinema had a remarkably short life, closing some time between March 1913 and 1st October 1913, when the licence was not renewed.
Surviving records at Stanley Urban District Council suggest the building was altered in March 1921 for use as an Ex-Servicemen’s Club.
By the 1980’s, and into the 1990’s, it was used as a builder’s store/warehouse. By the time I visited, in August 2008, the building was boarded up.
