In Lochmaben, about 12 miles north east of Dumfries, the Barras Cinema opened during World War II.
According to the 1953 Kinematograph Year Book, by that time it was owned by C & T Cinemas Ltd. of Newcastle-upon-Tyne.
The origin of the name is connected to the Barras United Presbyterian Church, which was built in 1813. In 1902 the Barras and Kirkmichael United Presbyterian Churches united and, by a further union in 1920, the Barras and the Victoria United Free Church formed the new congregation of St. Margaret’s Church, worshipping in what had been the old Victoria Church.
After lying empty for several years the Barras Church became the Barras Cinema.
After closure as a cinema, in the 1960’s the building was converted into housing.
