Globe Theatre ...St. Louis Missouri

Located on the corner of what was historically N. 7th Street and 719 Franklin Avenue (today Dr Martin Luther King Drive). The Globe Theatre was opened around 1899 and featured vaudeville. By 1910 it was screening movies. It seems to have gone back to live theatre use by 1926 and was closed in the early-1930’s.

The ‘Globe’ name was then taken over by the Palace Theatre, 1310 Franklin Avenue, in 1932 (which later became the Carver Theatre). The site of this Globe Theatre at N. 7th Street & M.L.K. Drive has been swallowed up by the Saint Louis Convention & Visitors Commission.

The image may be of the Globe Shoe and Clothing Company. In the 1909 Sanborn Maps, the Palace Theater is indeed at 1310 Franklin, but the NW corner of Franklin and 7th was Globe Shoe & Clothing.

There was a Globe Theatre in St. Louis around 1910, but I haven’t been able to find its location. It was listed in the 1910-1911 Cahn guide as a 500 seat ground floor vaudeville house, with a very small stage only 14 feet from the footlights to the back wall. It sounds like it would have been a very good candidate for conversion to movies, though I’ve found no evidence that it was.

A house called the Globe opened in St. Louis around 1878, but it was located on Morgan Street and is unlikely to be the same Globe that was operating in 1910. The November 22, 1881, issue of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch referred to the Morgan Street house as a “…low variety theater….” which had recently been closed and was unlikely to be able to get a license to reopen.

The theatre was a little more than half-way out the block, around where the roof sign reading “Globe” is seen.
