The North Western Drive-in is still there, just outside of Burchip, on the Burchip-Wycherproof Road, going east, just past the road distance sign, on the north side of the road. The North Western Drive-in site is complete except the panels are missing from the screen(frame and legs only), does not appear to be a funeral parlour anymore. Birchip home to the Australian vanilla slice competition, was featured on the Australian Broadcasting Corporation(ABC) program Back Roads(Season 1, episode 5 – 28/12/2015),no sight or mention of the North Western Drive-in, i don’t think!?
The entrance of the drive-in is off a side road(unnamed?) going north, and there is a(power sub-station?) on the right hand corner of the intersection!
118 Birchip-Wycherproof Road, Birchip, VIC 3483 is basically right infront of it.
Opened in 1965.
500 cars.
Looking at the aerial photos on Google Maps, it looks like the site is being used for probably an agistment for animals. I’d say possibly horses, you can see its been divided into small paddocks with these little shelters all over.
The owner(original?) of thls drive-in was also the local undertaker. Closed in 1986 with “Howard the duck”.
